How To Avoid The Cost Of An Oil Spill

One of the major risks with domestic heating oil is that the tank becomes damaged, causing an oil leak or spill. Not only is this costly to clean up, but it also poses an environmental risk.

Oil tanks can leak for a number of reasons such as damage to the main body of the tank, fuel lines or general wear and tear. Oil tanks have a life expectancy of around 20 years depending on if it is bunded or not- using beyond this time can increase the chances of your tank being damaged.

Signs to look for

it’s a good idea to check your tank on a monthly basis. Just like servicing a car your tank can become unsafe between services. Our drivers will always carry out a visual inspection before a delivery which you can do too. Some things to check for:

  • Cracks- Check for any small or large cracks in the Body of your tank.

  • Discolouration - if the tank is turning white or fading due to sun exposure it may be time to replace your tank

  • Bulges- check for any bowing where the tank is bulging.

  • Smell - If you are able to smell kerosene strongly you may have a tank leak.

  • Stains - If there are any stains or wet patches around your tank this would suggest a leak.

  • Corrosion- Check all pipework for any rust or damage.

Suggestions for What to Do if You Have a Leak

  • Firstly switch off the oil supply at your tank

  • If possible, find the source of the leak.

  • If the tank is cracked rub soap or duct tape the crack as a temporary fix.

  • Try to prevent any oil from entering nearby drains using sand, soil or an oil absorbent product

  • If the leak could affect a nearby waterway or stream it is important that you contact the environment agency.

  • Try to contain the spill using an oil spillage kit- Do not wash the oil away as this can make the problem worse.

  • Call your insurance company to notify them and start the process of making a claim.

  • Depending on the cause of the leak you may need to replace the tank and all necessary repairs should be completed before use.

How To Prevent A Leak

Our registered OFTEC Technician can conduct a Tank Health Check in which he will review the overall condition of the tank and provide advice and tips on when you should replace it or how you can maintain your tank to extend its life.

Purchasing a bunded oil tank is a great investment that helps you avoid damage from weather, spills and contamination whilst protecting the environment and providing the safest way to store your Oil.
