Top Tips To Prevent Running Out Of Fuel This Winter

Ordering Heating oil can often be left to the last minute resulting in an empty tank. Not only will it mean you don’t have any heating, it could also mean no hot water which is essential during the winter months.

Read our tips below on how to prevent running out so you are kept warm this winter.

Problems of a Run-out

Problems associated with running out include:

  • Allowing your tank to run down to low levels can cause sludge that can be pulled in to your fuel lines and filters causing your boiler to fail, requiring an engineer to fix it.

  • During the summer months running out may be tolerable however during periods of cold weather the vulnerable such as the elderly and very young are at risk.

  • Demand for heating oil is much higher during winter meaning delivery times can be increased which is not ideal for a run-out.

  • Depending on your supplier you may have to pay extra for an emergency delivery.

Plan Ahead

We encourage all of our customers to fill their tanks as early as possible. The earlier you order, the more likely you are to experience lower prices as the demand for heating oil usually peaks between October-December. Ordering earlier also means there is no need to worry if weather conditions worsen, which can increase delivery times. This will also prevent having sludge from the bottom of your tank, being pulled into your fuel lines and filters.

CHECK YOUR OIL LEVELS REGULARLY

Checking fuel levels regularly in the future is essential to prevent you from running out of oil. You can check your tank by purchasing a fuel monitor such as the Apollo Sonic Watchman which allows you to monitor oil levels from your home. Alternatively, you can use a stick to dip the tank.

Boiler Service

Having your boiler serviced in preparation for winter can greatly reduce the chance of expensive breakdowns or maintenance issues over the colder months. Your boiler system could be working harder than normal using more fuel than is needed to heat your home.
