Completely Running out of heating oil is easy-done by not monitoring your heating oil levels or worst case scenario, fuel theft. Read on for 5 key tips on what to do if you experience a run-out.

  1. Check You Have Fully Run-out

In some cases, people may suspect their tank has run out when it is in fact, a problem with their fuel lines, boiler or tank. It’s best practice to make sure that you have completely run dry first by dipping and checking your tanks oil level.

  2. Place An Order With Your Supplier

During the winter it is essential to phone your supplier as soon as possible to avoid any delays. The increase in demand for heating oil and adverse weather can often increase delivery times. It is worth mentioning you have run out when placing an order so your supplier can adjust their deliveries accordingly prioritising people left without heating.

At Andrew Grays Fuels & Co we would like to assure our customers that we do everything possible to get customers their deliveries during adverse weather conditions. we advise during this time to keep our depot up to date on conditions and to keep all access points clear to avoid any further delays.

  3. Re-Starting Your Boiler

It’s possible that you may require an engineer to restart your boiler. Most boilers are fitted with a safety mechanism which turns off the burner when there is no oil to combust. When you’re down to the last amount of oil, sludge and dirt sitting at the bottom of your tank may be pulled in to the fuel lines and filters. If this does happen you would have to phone an engineer to clean the filters/fuel lines and have your boiler re-started.

  4. Monitor Your Fuel Levels Regularly

Monitoring your oil regularly in future is essential to prevent you from running out of oil. You can check your tank either by dipping it with a stick or by using a device such as the Apollo Sonic Watchman which allows you to monitor your fuel levels from a gauge in your house.
